Medicare
External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program

Claiming Your Medicare External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement
If you’ve had breast cancer–related breast surgery, you may be entitled to a Medicare rebate of up to $400 for each external breast prosthesis — or up to $800 if you require two following bilateral surgery. This rebate applies to all eligible external prostheses, including purpose-made swimming breast forms, and can be claimed once every two years.
Who can claim?
To be eligible for the Medicare External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program, you must:
-
Be enrolled in Medicare.
-
Have undergone breast surgery as a result of breast cancer — including mastectomy, prophylactic mastectomy, or partial mastectomy/lumpectomy.
-
Not have made a claim under this program in the last two years unless:
-
Your doctor certifies you have an earlier medical need (e.g., a change in body shape or size, medical complications, or discomfort), or
-
Your prosthesis was lost or damaged in a declared natural disaster.
-
Support for veterans
If you’re an eligible veteran, you can access external breast prostheses and purpose-designed mastectomy bras through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP). This program can provide items at no cost to you, with fittings and supply arranged through approved providers.
