Living beyond Breast Cancer

Life Beyond Surgery — Ongoing Care & Connection

Breast cancer surgery may be behind you, but healing — in every sense of the word — doesn’t have an expiry date. Whether you’re 6 months, a year, many years post-surgery, or living with ongoing treatment for metastatic breast cancer, your body and mind continue to adapt. Scar tissue changes, muscle tightness, emotional triggers, and even changes in clothing fit can arise long after the “recovery” phase is said to be over.

This stage is about ongoing self-care, regular check-ins with your health, and living fully — whatever that looks like for you — while honouring all your body has been through.

Ongoing Physical Wellbeing

  • Scar care – Scars can remain sensitive or tight for years. Products like NewGel+ Scar Gel or strips can help soften and flatten scar tissue, even long after surgery.

  • Lymphoedema awareness – If you’ve had lymph nodes removed, be mindful of swelling in your arm, hand, or chest. Gentle exercise, compression garments, and regular monitoring can help manage it.

  • Mobility & strength – Stretching, Pilates, or yoga can improve range of motion, reduce stiffness, and help prevent shoulder or chest tightness.

  • Prosthesis and bra checks – Over time, body shape can change. An annual fitting ensures your bras and prostheses remain comfortable and supportive.

Emotional & Mental Health

Certain anniversaries, scan days, medical appointments, or unexpected sensations can stir up strong emotions — whether you are long past active treatment or living with ongoing treatment needs. It’s okay to reach out for support whenever you need it — from friends, counsellors, or breast cancer–specific peer groups. Many women find deep comfort in connecting with others who truly “get it.”

Self-Care for the Long Haul

  • Protect your skin – Surgical sites can be more sensitive to sun, so SPF and covering up are key.

  • Massage & scar release – Oncology-trained massage therapists can help reduce tightness and improve comfort.

  • Regular check-ups – Follow your doctor’s recommended screenings and follow-up schedule, whether for surveillance or ongoing treatment.

Connection & Community — You’re Not Alone

At Breasties Hub, we know that breast cancer’s impact doesn’t end with a final hospital appointment — and for some women, there isn’t a “final” appointment at all. That’s why we host Breasties Retreats with The Quiet Courage Foundation — warm, welcoming gatherings where women from all walks of life, all stages of recovery, and all stages of diagnosis come together to share stories, rest, laugh, and reconnect with themselves.

Whether you’re years past surgery, adjusting to life after treatment, or balancing life alongside ongoing care, our retreats offer a safe and understanding space to meet others who understand the unspoken parts of this journey.

From gentle yoga to honest conversations, from pampering to practical workshops, our retreats are designed to nurture every part of you — mind, body, and spirit.

Because life after surgery — and life with breast cancer — isn’t just about “moving on.” It’s about moving forward, at your own pace, with confidence, support, and a community that celebrates you.
